Leon Timbo: The Architect of "Transparent Soul"

Leon Timbo is a country-soul and Americana singer-songwriter celebrated for his commanding baritone, deeply vulnerable songwriting, and an entirely unique genre blend that his producers have affectionately dubbed transparent soul. Grounded in his faith and the rich tradition of Southern storytelling, Timbo weaves vintage soul, gospel, folk, R&B, and modern blues into music designed to heal and connect.

Early Life and Roots

Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Timbo grew up steeped in the spiritual and musical traditions of the church. The son of two pastors, he initially experienced music not just as entertainment, but as an essential tool for communicating spiritual truth and human emotion.

Despite this immersive musical upbringing, Timbo did not consider himself a singer in his youth. He was primarily a poet who prayed for a singing voice. His grandmother, Virginia, played a pivotal role in his musical awakening; she introduced him to the sounds of Ray Charles and bought him his first guitar when he was 17. Timbo officially began singing at 16, picked up the guitar in earnest at 20, and set off on a path inspired by legendary artists like Bill Withers, James Taylor, Donny Hathaway, and Andraé Crouch.

Building a Career

Timbo’s career began with a relentless, DIY work ethic. In the early 2000s, he cut an independent record, Soul Sessions, and hit the road. He performed in small venues across the country, building a fiercely loyal fanbase by focusing on intimate, heart-to-heart

connections with his audience. His grassroots hustle caught the attention of musician and actor Tyrese Gibson, who was moved by Timbo's storytelling and invited him to open for his tour. Taking Timbo under his wing as a protégé, Gibson helped open massive industry doors. Over the years, Timbo’s talent has placed him in extraordinary musical company. He has collaborated and performed with the Grammy-winning Fisk Jubilee Singers, toured alongside 2x-Grammywinning bassist Marcus Miller, and become a prominent fixture in the Americana landscape

through his work with the Black Opry.
